Lyrics And Songwriting

Lyrics and songwriting seem more unique in today’s music, than at any other time in history, it seems. If you listen to the words of music written today, you will hear that lyrics and songwriting bear some resemblance to past years, however. Today’s young musicians are singing about street life and that’s not something often talked about in previous decades. If you were a country-western fan, you might start to see some similarities in the real-life stories.

This is just one example of how lyrics and songwriting have migrated into something different, but you can still hear plenty of songs that talk about love and lost relationships. In fact, the top music on the charts seems to be dictated by relationship-related music, even if it isn’t the traditional relationships that some people think of. Today’s couples may not be married or monogamous, might have children born out of wedlock and may be couples of the same sex. Things have changed in real-life and lyrics and songwriting have changed, as well.

For those used to traditional modern, pop music and chart-toppers, the hip-hop rap music or off-color techno rock might not be ideal examples, for comparisons. Anybody from older generations may think today’s music has qualities that are lacking, when it comes to the lyrics and songwriting involved. It wasn’t that long ago that our parents thought the same thing about Elvis Presley and his sexual-insinuating dances, if you remember correctly.

Parents today may not be excited about today’s lyrics and songwriting, but it’s born from the same substance. Life in the streets is more difficult than ever, but there are many rags-to-riches stories, when it comes to those that have turned their adversities, into advantages. If you look at any popular rapper or hip-hop music mogul, you’ll see they have turned a rough up-bringing into a comfortable lifestyle of sporty cars and luxurious mansions. It might be your hard-earned dollars that have lead to their popularity, if you have teenagers in the household.

For this reason, it’s important for parents to be aware of the backgrounds associated with today’s lyrics and songwriting. When your kids are listening to music, it might not be the words they are listening to, but the beat or bass rhythm guitar. It helps to be in-tune with today’s music because it isn’t that different from past decades, if you listen closely!
